Qualcomm is the company that provides the best processors for the high end currently in the Android ecosystem, and the Snapdragon 845 is the reference to it, since it was the most used SoC in this segment.
To introduce a worthy successor, Qualcomm has introduced the Snapdragon 855 as the brain of the high-end flagships of 2019. With this new processor comes a new fingerprint sensor under the screen of every device, as a technology that has been avoided for some time and that finally begins to make sense to improve what is already working correctly.
The Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor for fingerprint
Qualcomm designed a new protection system based on an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that is placed under the screen, in order to make it much more functional and safe.
Like this, the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor performs its functions regardless the fingertip is contaminated or dirty, thanks to its ultrasonic system is much more deep and is able to scan in 3D the whole required information to unlock the smartphone.
Earlier, this company from the US had already presented a similar technology, a fingerprint reader that would work through ultrasonic waves generating a 3D verification that was only implemented in the Xiaomi Mi 5s, being the 3D Sonic Sensor the next generation to be used by 2019 flagships.
It results a very similar technology to Apple’s Face ID, since it creates a 3D map of the fingerprint and avoids any reading error in real time. In addition, the Samsung Galaxy S10 could be the first Android smartphone to use the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor that would be integrated into the Infinity “0” screen with no notch and integrated camera.
Lastly, Alex Katouzian as Qualcomm general manager foresees that by mid-2019 half high-end phones will carry this advanced system that aims to improve the security of a fingerprint sensor, and avoid the chances of users having their security passed on their smartphones.
